Active ingredient: Brimonidine tartrate (0.025%) - redness reliever

Inactive ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride, boric acid, calcium chloride dihydrate, glycerin, potassium chloride, sodium borate decahydrate, sodium chloride, water for injection. Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide may be used to adjust pH.

Are LUMIFY eye drops safe for your eyes? Can there be side effects?

LUMIFY is safe for most people when used as directed. In clinical trials, side effects were mild, temporary, and infrequent.

The most common adverse events in clinical trials included (observed in 4.0% or fewer patients):

- Changes in vision/blurriness
- Eye or eyelid redness
- Dry eyes
- Irritation
- Foreign body sensation
- Swelling

Why LUMIFY is different: The brimonidine mechanism of action targets veins instead of arteries, which reduces redness with a lower risk of rebound redness or loss of effectiveness over time.

Stop use and consult an eye doctor if:

- you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye.

What is Brimonidine Tartrate (0.025%)?

Brimonidine Tartrate 0.025% is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used to relieve eye redness. It works by constricting veins (venules) instead of arteries (arterioles), which reduces redness with a lower risk of rebound redness than older vasoconstrictors. It provides fast relief and can be used as directed for safe, effective redness reduction. It is not a bleach or a dye, but a medication that targets the natural vascular response in the eye.

How is LUMIFY different from other redness relievers like Visine or Clear Eyes?

LUMIFY® (brimonidine tartrate 0.025%) works through a different mechanism from other OTC redness relievers. The active ingredient in LUMIFY, brimonidine tartrate, is a selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, which means it targets redness differently at the receptor level.

How OTC redness relievers compare:

- Tetrahydrozoline is a selective α1 receptor agonist
- Naphazoline is a mixed α1/α2 receptor agonist
- Brimonidine (LUMIFY) is a selective α2 receptor agonist

Why the receptor targeting difference matters:

- α1-adrenergic receptor agonists constrict both conjunctival arterioles and venules, which restricts availability of oxygen to the surrounding tissue and increases potential for rebound redness
- Selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonists primarily constrict conjunctival venules, sustaining availability of oxygen to tissue and decreasing potential for rebound redness

What this means for continued use:

- Ocular decongestants with α1-adrenergic receptor agonist activity can be associated with loss of effectiveness with continued use (tachyphylaxis) and rebound redness upon treatment discontinuation
- Studies of the selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist brimonidine did not show evidence of tachyphylaxis
- Based on clinical study results, brimonidine 0.025% currently does not carry the "overuse" warning mandated for ocular products containing other vasoconstrictors

As with any OTC eye drops, use LUMIFY as directed. Stop use and ask a doctor if: you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness, or irritation of the eye; or condition worsens or persists for more than 3 days.

Relieves redness of the eye due to minor eye irritations

Adults and children 5 years of age and over:

- Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 6-8 hours
- Do not use more than 4 times daily
- Remove contact lenses before use
- Wait at least 10 minutes before re-inserting contact lenses after use
- If using other ophthalmic products while using this product wait at least 5 minutes between each product
- To avoid contamination, do not touch tip of container to any surface
- Replace cap after each use
